CAREER OPTIONS: JOB SHARING
To share a job means a formal arrangement in which two individuals agree to share one job or position. The position is normally full-time and each of the job share partners works half of the time. Typically both individuals have the same responsibilities, but at different moments in time. It is something like a sort of arrangement to shift work. When one person comes, they carry on the duties and responsibilities of the other involved. Many men and women and organizations are going for this type of arrangement to help accommodate different family needs. Canada is a good example: about 20% of that country’s companies allow job sharing. Many of such arrangements involve women (Source: Conference Board of Canada, CBC).
Individuals who are doing well in job sharing roles give value to security and structure, and are convinced that the role they are fulfilling is very important. They are striving to keep their employment standing whereas, at the same time they are filling another important need or value.
